Some cross-property branding projects are just weird. Like releasing a video game about Star Wars in which the characters are Lego people. The environments and ships do not appear to be made from Legos, which is disappointing (Though you can "Use the Force to move and transform LEGO® objects"). I wonder if all of these characters exist in the "real world" Lego sets? | comment 0 | trackback 0

A typically concise and insightful post from Kottke about how the March of the Penguins was actually remade for American audiences. The whole film was redubbed (though that might be obivous, since it's in English) and a new score was created. The original sounds, well, a little dorky. | comment 0 | trackback 0

Nothing against Nintendo, but look no farther for proof that the US Patent process is insane. United States Patent 6,935,954 is for a "Sanity system for video game." That's right, this is a patent securing the rights of Nintendo to having a "sanity meter" in a video game. Wonder if this mean someone has already patented the ubiquitous "health meter" in videogames? This is just so inane. | comment 0 | trackback 0

While we're on the topic of costumes, $4 is damn impressive for a not-bad-looking pseudo-Venetian (not Venetain, mind you) bird mask. The pet costumes, though, I'm a little less into. Unlike the secretary one. | comment 0 | trackback 0

There is some sort of sick "angry inch" joke in in here somewhere. | comment 0 | trackback 0

Not sure about the colors, but someone built a Serenity out of a Legos. I think that's interesting. . . Or maybe it's just an excuse to mention that I'm planning to have a Firefly-episode viewing party sometime in the next few weeks to expose friends to the show -- In the hope that you'll like it and go see the movie, and the movie will do great, and there will be another season. | comment 1

If "ice cold soda pop contributes the most calories to the American diet," then we are trully lost. . . At least there is some movement to cut down on it in schools. The quantity of candy and soda in school vending machines/shops seems just not smart. There is a bodega downstairs from me (we are across from a High School) and it's remarkable how much candy and soda those kids buy. | comment 1

Pillowman was not so good, btw. Some great scenic design moments but just not feeling the love. A bit of revulsion, but not the love. | comment 0 | trackback 0

Now it's titled "life on the belt" but the URL is "from the belt" (Though the URL doesn't have spaces, of course. It doesn't have %20 either, which it could . . . Anyway.) and I should note that this life on the belt blog (In lower case because that's how the author lists it, even though in my "New" style guide I use capitals and proper punctuation and all) is his second voice on the web. . . . [edited]. . . This new one, however, is damn interesting, easy to follow, and had frequent updates (Largely focused, so far, on the "Loader - Scanner" dichotomy). If you're looking for a point of comparison, I suggest we think of it as a more focused/monomaniacal Graphite Furnace.

The Fringe Festival starts tomorrow and I'm seeing The Pillowman (Warning: Music) with Ev tonight. Coincidence? Hm. | comment 0 | trackback 0

It's summer, so no one needs blankets, but I'm glad to see that America Apparel sells aFleece blanket now. Only $30 too. In a lot of colors. Now if only they sold men's boxer shorts. That is one big glaring omission from their line that I just don't understand. Knit would be ok. Oh well. | comment 1 | trackback 0

Not that I was, but I have been, speaking of ginger infusions (liquor, not herbal/tea ones this time) -- Corin came up with some a good pair of links for a Vodka Infusion Party and from Mefi. Looks likes it's not hard at all. Next project. . . | comment 0 | trackback 0

Do you think this Workman's Kilt is entirely serious? I suspect it is. Hm. | comment 1 | trackback 0

I was sad to see the Andres Coffee Shop go. Had eaten there quite a few times over th years. Sounds like that will be another Apple Store. Those of you with whom I've had this discussion know I'm not so keen on the stores or the ideals under which they are run. I can't help but notice, in the case for instance, the remarkable proximity to the independent (and, admittedly, at times frustrating) local Apple reseller Tekserve. Ah, good luck to ye. | comment 0 | trackback 0

Went up to Buck's Rock for a little Reunion las weekend with Rae, Ami, and Whitney. We spent a bit of time on route, ate Carvel ice cream just like camp days (I even got Treasure Island. Mmm...), visited glass, scultpure, metalsmithing, the art studio, pub. Saw some old friends and hung out on various railings. Even went on a little hike of sorts. | comment 0 | trackback 0

Haven't heard the new album yet, but Röyksopp is doing a show September 21st. If anyone wants to join Chris and I, let me know. You know, hopefully someone I know, not just some random person who found this page searching for "evilfest" again. | comment 0 | trackback 0
