We ate red fruit/vegetables and white cheese last night. They were especially tasty grilled. (Though a bit messy on my lap). It was a beautiful night with trees over our heads (seen from the yard of the barn, during a cookout with camp fire this weekend). . . The rest of the images are posted in the usual spot. | comment 1 | trackback 0

Four strong we went to see a preview of the upcoming Firefly movie, Serenity the night before last. The prolific Ev, among the four, already has a mini-review up. I won't get into a proper review now, but will say that it was very, very good. I felt a few spots here and there were a bit rough, but this is a preview and I will most definitely go see the final release as well. | comment 0 | trackback 0

A client of ours has one of these Telesteps telescoping ladders. It's very small when foldeed and unexpectedly sturdy. Not what I need right now, though (I need an A frame). And a bit pricey at $200-300. | comment 0 | trackback 0

I think it is safe to say Robert DarkFall clearly deserves a post of his own at this point, in a spin-off kind of way. He just commented on the AT&T Ogo post (which is up now to a remarkable 28 comments I might add) and runs what I think would easily be considered the preeminent Ogo news site. In my various explorations out looking for the answer to "What happened to the Ogo after Cingular ate AT&T Wireless?" all roads lead to Tweaky. Enjoy. | comment 1 | trackback 0

How many Farscape fans do we have out there? It has recently come to my attention that not only my Ma (a long-time fan), but also Chris and Ken might count themselves as fans. I missed much of the show and have wanted to watch the whole thing in order for a while now -- but with four seasons at $120 each (plus the final mini-series) the cost was plain excessive. So I have been trying to think of some clever options, such as: How about a group of 8 or 9 people get together, split the cost and pass the discs around? Or maybe sign up for NetFlix and put the whole show in my queue? Then pass them around (is that allowed by the NetFlix term of service?) or have some marathon viewing parties? Any other ideas out there? | comment 0 | trackback 0

Jude sent a fun article from the NYT on Finland. It focuses mainly on music with some nods to architecture and eats. Not sure how long it will be accessible, but some highlighted links: The Finnish Music Information Center, Finlandia Hall, Finnish National Opera, The Sibelius Academy, Savonlinna Festival, and Kuhmo Chamber Festival. | comment 0 | trackback 0

First, Cingular's website is remarkably bad; everytime I think I've found just the link I'm looking for, it's a dead one that goes nowhere. Second, why do they have suche terrible options for phones now? I was looking for international-capable Cingular phones that support the 850 band, Bluetooth, and are reasonably priced, and came up with four promisng options (some the best of which are, maddenigly, already discontinued): The Nokia 3220, Sony Ericsson T637, Nokia 6230, and Sony Ericsson Z500. | comment 0 | trackback 0

I haven't seen Star Wars III yet, so I can't properly argue or agree with the points Stephenson makes in this New York Times article, but the interplay between understanding and manipulating technlogy and in finding a peace-filled mindstate and trusting one's intuitions is personally fascinating. I, both by nature of the field I work in and by my (genetic? learned?) predispositons, devote no small amount of attention to technology and how it works, yet I also strive to relax, let those facts and figures slide away, to not think quite so much when confronted with heavy issues. The facts available almost always have problematic gaps -- gaps that inutuition and experience are more and more often called upon to fill. Not wether but where to draw the line between gaining more facts and relying on instincts, is in the end, the true question. | comment 1 | trackback 0

The Cableyoyo appears to be an elegant excess cable management solution for thin cables like those that come with mobile phone chargers, iPods, USB devices, and headphones. The mount to attach it to the rear of your monitor is a nice touch. To be honest though, my preference still is for devices to come with shorter cables. I go out of my way (and spend extra money) to buy very short FireWire cables, iPod adapters, USB mobile phone chargers, and digitial camera mini-USB cables to use with my laptop. Carrying around the extra cables (and dealing with them) when the device is connected to a port only four inches away annoys me. Or maybe offends some sense of efficiency. | comment 0 | trackback 0

Not quite sure what to make of TimeLog, but at first glance it sounds like an interesting tool to help all of us with our timesheets (Corin: Ahem...) The screenshots aren't shedding too much light on the application, but the integration with AddressBook and iCal at least sounds worth examining. | comment 0 | trackback 0

It's not quite a new season, but it is still a damn good sign: The SciFi Channel picked up FireFly and will be airing all 15 existing episodes. Hot doggity. | comment 0 | trackback 0

This "How to prepare your book for CafePress" took a bit of poking around to find. Next time I have a book I want to make a few copies of, this looks very attractive. I'm thinking the Perfect Bound binding and 5x8 (Standard Paperback) options. | comment 0 | trackback 0

To answer the question of when exactly I was born today: Six o'clock in the evening. And my mom notes that it was 95 and humid in the hospital (no air conditioning either). Ugh. And I was a fat baby. | comment 0 | trackback 0

My Fa recently posted photos of a lot of his miniatures, many made back when I was a kid. The Explorers I did a tiny bit of work on, specifically the blobs/helmets on these guys' heads . I always liked the updated reinterpretation of Ozymandias. I loved the Sawmill too (It was the how I knew how to make the deck for Rodrigo's Bonsai tree, for those few of you who have any idea what I'm talking about; that and Architecture school, maybe). His Star Wars-themed Inside an At-At Repair Facility is especially timely, in light of my last post. | comment 1 | trackback 0

Exciting press release about a small, low power system for extracting Oxygen from water. Interesting that it references, of all the SciFi options, Star Wars to explain the concept. Bonus for explaining something I've occasionally wondered about: How do they provide breathable atmosphere for nuclear submarines and space stations? Well, turns out they "use systems that generate Oxygen from water by performing 'Electrolysis', which is chemical separation of Oxygen from Hydrogen." | comment 0 | trackback 0

The best quotation (about a theoretical misuse in crowds) in this BBC article on a study of a "Trust potion" based on Oxytocin: "Those with such fears should note that current marketing techniques -- for political and other products -- may well exert their effects through the natural release of molecules such as oxytocin in response to well-crafted stimuli. Civic alarm at such abuses should have started long before this study." | comment 1
