in case my sister ever wants her butcher block/dining room table back, this big sur one (from crate&barrel) is promising. it's a little bigger (would seat 10 instead of 8) and a little lower (couple fo inches; actually at standard dining table height) than the current one, if you're interested.

two thoughts about this inane ("i'm not sleeping?") story. one, sure glad matthew didn't post photos of his home made little gate and get our site flooded and two, Pratt Institute has a permanent collection? Do they have a museum for it?

been doing some research lately on what's involved in starting a restaurant. came across some good resources, such as this article on restaurant software (plus this second installment), this one on mac pos systems in general, and this one on make restaurant business plans.

in case you don't keep an eye on the recent comments bit up there on the left, the ever-expanding-list-of-comments entry-about-the-ogo somehow keeps growing. up to 24 comments now and a lot of them are remarkably detailed and helpful. i'm tempted.

when my sister matched for derm, i remember feeling a bit surprised that a mysterious big computer brain somewhere took all these inputs and just plopped out a series of pronouncements, all without any clear transparency to the participants. it seemed like people would challenge the results if they weren't what was expected and yet apparently the system worked so well no one had cause to complain (or contest) the results. . . well, it would appear the same couldn't be said for urology this year. i wonder who makes this "match" software? do all specialties use the same kind? do most grow their own?

i laughed so hard my eyes teared up. and rach totally snarfed the glass of water she was drinking when i got to "there is no tap water at the restaurant." . . . yes, that's right: a shouts and murmurs that's actually funny. i did not see that coming. "happy anniversary, barbara"

i finally posted my payphone photo collection. it was inspired by 2600's famous feature. if you flickr and have some photos, go ahead and tag them with the payphones tag. looks like i'm not alone.

yet another reason to be hostile towards mci/uunet: they make $5 million/yr from spam-related activities. jerks.

note to self: before giving a demo on a big, new, fancy search engine, poke around a but and try and make sure the results it gives you actually make sense.

more firefly bits. wanted to hilight two great resources out there: an exhaustive collection of screen captures (as in still photos) at can't take the sky and (this one's kinda for my mom and ev, in diff ways) a comprehensive reference for all the chinese insults and slang spoken in the show over at the firelfly chinese pinyinary. now that is one fine way to work your basic chinese pronunciation, dong ma?

my mobile reception, especially in my apt, suddenly got much better this weekend (or maybe last week when i was away); i have five bars everywhere now. the network name is also consistently cingular (used to be at&t) -- so, not that this story follows logically from that point, but an overview of the at&t wireless (company is owned by cingular now, but the name reverts back to at&t), cingular (owns at&t wireless now, but not the name; see previous), sbc (owns 60% of cingular, in talks to merge w at&t), and at&t (diff company from the wireless one, in talks w sbc to merge, apparently still thinking of relaunching a wireless service under the name at&t wireless but w service provided by sprint) dance is, well, soap-opera-esque.

it's disturbing but hardly surprising that most high schools don't understand or even seem to agree with the first amendment: "When told of the exact text of the First Amendment, more than one in three high school students said it goes 'too far' in the rights it guarantees. Only half of the students said newspapers should be allowed to publish freely without government approval of stories." not to be snide, but i kinda feel like we shoulda seen this coming after the last election.
