maybe i've mentioned this before, but the entry about radio frequency reminded me of how handy the simple, wonderful "schubert it" pdf browser blugin is. it allows pdfs to be displayed directly in a web browser. very nice.

ever wonder how the radio frequencies are allocated here in the states? that pdf shows you in detail. the ones marked "amateur" are for things like those 900MHz and 2.4GHZ cordless phones, wifi (in mac-ville known as airport), and ham radio, among other things.

this comparative morphologies project is gorgeous. one of those "why didn't i think of (and do) this?" kind of things. beautifully crafted, from what i can see, as well. down to the torn page edges.

just like that fantastic gallery plugin for iphoto i mentioned a while back, this flickr plugin for iphoto makes it a heck of lot more convenient to drop photos into the stream.

just an aside that if you don't have my address handy and want to send me a message, just go to the contact page. it's challenging to differentiate real comments from spam sometimes...

hasbro is releasing a darth tater version of mr. potato head? that's just dumb. why get kids a toy of the villian looking cute? doesn't that mess with their heads or kinda send the wrong moral message?

we went to see the wally cardona quartet at the dance theater workshop last week. wow. we have been to a number of dance performances over the last couple of years and this one blew them all away (even the one at the met). trully exceptional. exactly what modern dance seems like it is supposed to be: exciting, exploratory, demonstrating a high level of skill, exposing fantastic emotions, intriguing music, fresh staging, unexpected movement and gesture.

now google has a mini? just two days after apple announces one seems like weird timing. maybe it's like when two studios developed and shot asteroids-about-to-hit-the-earth movies, movies about bugs, or tv shows about space stations.

this list of "100 things we didn't know this time last year" has quite a few wonderful tidbits "#68. Bill Clinton revealed in his autobiography that he didn't learn to ride a bike properly until he was 22." well, i'm about a decade late and i'm not sure i could really describe my riding as "proper" just yet. and how about this one? "#73. Ducks have regional accents. London ducks shout out a rough quack to be heard above the urban din; those in the West Country make a quieter, softer sound." ducks are fun.

apple's new ipod shuffle (a super tiny ipod with no display and a small amount of storage), mac mini (what i'd wished the cube was going to be, but a way more impressive price, size, and feature set), and pages (a what-appears-to-be-viable alternate to microsoft word) all look pretty wonderful. never expected all of those rumors really to be true. wow. if they can actually ship all of these on time, i will be very impressed.

i know i'm a bit biased here, but come on: hackers have been able to use the digital rights management (marketing-speak for copy protection) in the latest version of windows media player (yes, only on windows, not mac os x) to install trojans (they're like viruses). that, while not ironic, is certainly royally messed up: "'When a user tries to play a protected Windows media file, this technology demands a valid license. If the license is not stored on the computer, the application will look for it on the Internet, so that the user can acquire it directly or buy it,' Panda Software explained. An unsuspecting user attempting to download the DRM (digital rights management) license will instead be redirected to a Web site that loads a large quantity of adware, spyware, modem dialers and other viruses."
