we saw eat the taste with two dishes last night after a series of amusing mishaps involving not-quite-right times and dates. overall the play was well worth the time, generally funny, a silly premise well played with wit. there is something distinctly odd about protest/political topics in this post-election headspace that the play does reference directly (the recurring theme of the retired/secretly-not-actually-retired attorney general, for instance), but it does leave me wondering, just a bit, how/if to engage in political thought these days. | comment 0 | trackback 0

the link came from kottke, the topic involves ginger, and there's a chez panisse connection. so this gingersnaps recipe goes out to r. | comment 0 | trackback 0

a group of researchers at uc berkeley crunched numbers and determined something that makes my skin crawl (though do note it would have not have changed the outcome of florida). the researchers' data, slashdot has a discussion going on this topic, and cnet has a very level-headed article on this. this seems like a very big deal: the most recent airport express firmware update adds the capability for a keyspan IR remote (URM-17A) to control the machine running itunes through the usb port on the airport express. yes, you read that right: "When used with AirPort Express the Express Remote provides a powerful way to locally control music being streamed from iTunes on a remote PC or Mac." the fact that this required apple to modify the firmware on the airport express itself seems noteworthy. is this a sign of more accessories for our little friend? | comment 0 | trackback 0

not much there until her friend finishes the site, but if you're looking for a glassware designer, deborah ehrlich does technically have a site now. and i hear she got a broadband internet connection too. | comment 1 | trackback 0

quick, what's unusual about these bookshelves. some background info on the project here, btw. | comment 1 | trackback 0

rach and i were just talking about the fedex logo this weekend and just a few days later, here's an interview with the lead on the project, lindon leader. i wonder what he thinks of the curious multi-colored-asterix-dedex-kinkos brand (the kinkos near us just rebranded). as it happens, i'm sitting at a branding firm client today and just had a chat with some formerly-interested parties. small world. | comment 0 | trackback 0

we went to see daniel marr at pete's candy store in w'burg last night. wow, he has a really great stage presence (funny, relaxed). i'm no music writer, so i'm not going to try and describe his music (ok, maybe: folky? beck-like? singer/songwriter? ironic?) go check out the downloads. seriously, go listen. | comment 0 | trackback 0

er? k has a link to this mcdonalds japan ad with ronnie now played by sexy model in an "updated" mcdonalds outfit. no idea what to think. ok, i like the hair and the closing "tomato fetish" shot (the ad is in windows media player, but if you have it installed it will will give an error and then open in the player). | comment 0 | trackback 0

niles speakers selectors are a handy way to connect multiple speakers to one amp. would be good for upstate. we'll see if i win my bid on ebay for one. | comment 0 | trackback 0

another fun family history bit, courtesy of the new ever bigger google: the rhode island historical cemeteries transcription project page with louis (gramp's and lester's dad) location. | comment 0 | trackback 0

i was testing the newly doubled size of google's index and came across some memoirs by my cousin sarah kurinsky about her grandfather (and the brother of my gramps) lester macktez. nice bit of family history. | comment 0 | trackback 0

yes, we are in bizarro world now. the vatican has issued a sex guide titled It's A Sin Not To Do It. ok. | comment 1 | trackback 0

it's all about the margin of error. sorry, but it always is, and not just the exit polls. the actual, official votes too. | comment 1 | trackback 0

if this figure of 100,000 civilian deaths due to the invasion of iraq is even in the right order of magnitude, then, well. . . i don't even know what to say. this page gives a good sense of scale. | comment 1 | trackback 0

you gotta just read the whole aljazeera version. if you drop the few direct islam references it reads like any one of dozens of american liberal positions. christ, he even talks about the foolishness of the current economic deficit. and haliburton: "the shady Bush administration-linked mega-corporations". and little bush's goat-reading time. | comment 0 | trackback 0

we were wondering this weekend where we could find dull transcripts of the osama tape. after a bit of poking around, i gave up, but came across this exceptional article at kuro5hin startling differences between the cnn and aljazeera translations. how anyone could read this as anything but damning to little bush amazes me. how about this spine chilling part (from the aljazeera version): "This resemblance began after the visits of Bush Senior to the region at a time when some of our compatriots were dazzled by America and hoping that these visits would have an effect on our countries. All of a sudden he was affected by these monarchies and military regimes and became jealous of their remaining decades in their position to embezzle the public wealth of the Nation without supervision or accounting. So he took dictatorship and suppression of freedoms to his son and they named it the Patriot Act under the pretences of fighting terrorism. In addition, Bush sanctioned the installing of sons as state governors and did not forget to import expertise in election fraud from the regions presidents to Florida to be made use of in moments of difficulty. All that we have mentioned has made it easy for us to provoke and bait this administration." | comment 0 | trackback 0

there is something so baldfaced (and dare isay evil?) about a stunt like this in florida. i know, i know but how do these people sleep at night? | comment 0 | trackback 0
