i stopped using vindigo a few months ago when i stopped using my palm (started using my SE T616 as a calendar for quick reference and just using my laptop for making appts and for an addressbook). so today i thought i'd see what the heck happend to the one thing i miss about the palm, and this page says they have vindigo for my mobile. nice idea, but when i go to download instructions i get the following: "1. From your phone's main menu, select mMode, 2. Select Browse Websites, 3. Then choose the Travel and Dining category, 4. Select Vindigo, and 5. Finally, enjoy." which is great except for step 4: Vindigo isn't listed in travel & dining. and mmode is so slow it's painful. and part of the value of vindigo for the palm was that you didn't need a connection to find your options or your way. too bad. | comment 6 | trackback 0

corin means 18 Arhans and this page explains the meaning: "The word "arhan" in the restaurant's title is another term for arhat, a Buddhist sage who has achieved nirvana. Regarded as original students of Shakyamuni Buddha, the eighteen arhans supposedly promised him they'd wait for Maitreya, the next Buddha, before retiring, so that people could have someone to direct prayers to. Having entered the vast pantheon of popular Chinese deities, they are widely admired as aides to the poor and bringers of rain." | comment 0 | trackback 0

i volunteered to be a poll clerk this afternoon. i have a training class tomorrow morning and on tues i'm working at a poll site not far from my office from the ungodly hour of 5:30AM until the polls close around 9PM. | comment 1 | trackback 0

(as you could prob guess, from rach) mucho ethics issues aside, i gotta admit they're damn cute. | comment 1 | trackback 0

this odd move seems curiously in character: it appears that the official little bush web site blocked for non-us web browsers. it could be a cost/bandwidth-saving measure. it could be just another fuck you to the international community. might be a accidental policy change (though that seems very unlikely). regardless, it is a most uncommon move. | comment 0 | trackback 0

i must admit i didn't see the the ipod photo coming. it's got some interesting specs (like the new screen using the same typeface as mac os x [myriad], video out of course, sync w iphoto, and longer battery life) but i'm not i'm not dying for one (to be fair, i'm still using an original 5GB one so i'm prob not the best test subject). and then there's the u2 special edition; um, that one i'll be skipping. | comment 0 | trackback 0

the at&t wireless and cingular merger hasn't produced any visible results yet (except for some work for a friend), but it's been approved now. | comment 0 | trackback 0

succinct article on some of the federal rights that depend on marital status. some of these i would characterize differently, but the quick list is helpful and a few on here i would not have thought of. | comment 0 | trackback 0

an inspiring blog on republicans who have switched and who do not support bush for president. nice reading some positive tidbits today. . . | comment 0 | trackback 0

fascinating side by side comparison of the original and new star wars action figures. i remember my mom's impressive collection of the original ones. | comment 0 | trackback 0

rather long article in the nyt mag neatly explaining bush's ideological underpinnings. a choice quotation from biden: "'I was in the Oval Office a few months after we swept into Baghdad,' he began, 'and I was telling the president of my many concerns' -- concerns about growing problems winning the peace, the explosive mix of Shiite and Sunni, the disbanding of the Iraqi Army and problems securing the oil fields. Bush, Biden recalled, just looked at him, unflappably sure that the United States was on the right course and that all was well. ''Mr. President,' I finally said, 'How can you be so sure when you know you don't know the facts?'' Biden said that Bush stood up and put his hand on the senator's shoulder. 'My instincts,' he said. 'My instincts.' Biden paused and shook his head, recalling it all as the room grew quiet. 'I said, 'Mr. President, your instincts aren't good enough!'" | comment 0 | trackback 0

a bellweather perhaps? little bush's hometown newspaper (the iconoclast in crawford), who endorsed him last time around, endorsed kerry last week. and boy are they mad at bush: "Kerry has a positive vision for America, plus the proven intelligence, good sense, and guts to make it happen. That’s why The Iconoclast urges Texans not to rate the candidate by his hometown or even his political party, but instead by where he intends to take the country. The Iconoclast wholeheartedly endorses John Kerry." | comment 0 | trackback 0

(from tye) another good video showing the intense repetition of gop talking points across a range of speakers and effectively making it look creepy and disturbing. matthew's favorite former mayor features prominently towards the end. | comment 0 | trackback 0

have i mentioned that i joined the electronic frontier foundation a little while back? i also just gave some funds to ipac, a political action committee (like move on) that seeks to counteract the propaganda and influence of the large media companies and provide an opposition to their perverse intellectual property agenda. | comment 0 | trackback 0

this is a rather big deal: one of indymedia's servers was seized by the FBI last week (10/7). amazingly, they still have not been given a reason why the servers where taken. | comment 0 | trackback 0

for a second, this att ogo thing looked very low-cost interesting, but after looking over the salesman's shoulder today and browsing the (horrible/uninformative flash-based) site, now i'm thinking it's lame -- like a half-assed tmobile sidekick/danger hiptop. [update: at least they have a coherent non-flash site up now. which has this slick (sarcasm) empty accessories section. the good: no contract, only $15/mo for existing att customers, uses a mini-usb port for charging; the bad: $100 to buy, a remarkably goofy industrial design, cheap feeling plastics (on the unit i saw in person), only good for email and IM (not web), nice non-flash site sends you to flash site for most questions (hello?).] | comment 30 | trackback 0

these corrections have got to be all over the blogosphere (intermagoogleweb?) by now, but here's a nice list of cheney's flat out lies during the dabate. | comment 0 | trackback 0

this would have to be the most poignant reason to start a restaurant i've heard in a long time: "Today, we have lost our culture. We live in a new era of culinary insecurity. People lack the basic understanding of food. Cooking is no longer taught at home or in schools." honestly, those are some seriously true words. the name "FoodBall," however, i'm a little less sure about. | comment 1 | trackback 0

the article doesn't mention sean, but he's the drviing force behind using FCP for jarhead. | comment 0 | trackback 0

did anyone else know amazon does take out menus? they have the one for cafe deville, for instance. | comment 1 | trackback 0

(from chris) mr. cheney not doing so well with that truth thing: "Oh, Yeah." well, i suppose "fuck you" wouldn't have sounded very "presidential." | comment 0 | trackback 0

so i was a bit surprised when cheney touted a website in his debate as evidence that halliburton is innocent of charges, but i must admit i was even more surprised when i went there. the washington monthly provides a bit more info and a few more questions, but a preview for those of you who don't follow the link: "George Soros, the billionaire investor and philanthropist, is beginning a nationwide tour this week to talk about how the war in Iraq is making America less safe -- and why President Bush should not be re-elected." | comment 1 | trackback 0

thank goodness for the comments. see, we have this article on the republican and conservative side of watchblog claiming the draft news is a "myth" but also have comments chopping the delusion claim to bits. | comment 0 | trackback 0

news of another disturbing congressional bill (HR 10), this one permitting sending certain suspects abroad for torture, apparently. | comment 0 | trackback 0

what a remarkably incomprehensible diagram about at&t's edge network. i know what all this stuff is and i still can't tell what the heck is going on with all those arrows. and the acronyms? this kind of thing is why you should not use acronyms. | comment 0 | trackback 0

this post at kottke on dining at daniel reads like some kind of alternate dimension, future/past of me and rach (who, i should add, just happend to explain garde manger to me a few days ago). | comment 0 | trackback 0
