kinda big news over at slashdot (at least for any of us who just read cryptonomicon) on quantum crypto leaving the lab. the application is really pretty narrow at first, but potentially has widers uses; it is currently limited to point-to-point sites connected directly by optical fiber within 120km of each other (according the the MagiQ VN datasheet). for more background info, check out the wikipedia entries on quantum cryptography and the one-time pad.
