great article on how the form of spreadsheets distorts our thinking in the world of "what ifs," implying precision where none exists. another interesting indication of how the tools we choose affect the questions we ask as much as the answers we get.

so a few of us watched ringu (japanese, 1998) last night. we had all (some at diff times) seen (most of)
the ring (american, 2002), a remake. now granted, a couple of us haven't seen the very beginning of "the ring," it was 20min longer, and it was made 14 years later. but everything i'd read indicated that "ringu" was better/scarier/etc . . . but man do i strongly disagree. i felt "the ring" had a significantly more sophisticated plot/script and was filled with much more frightening images/passages/scenes/ideas. perhaps translation flaws account for some of the weakness ("frollic in the brine, goblin be thine?" ugh.) but the out-of-the-blue deus ex machina of moments like "i have ESP too" just bit the big one. ok, back to work. maybe rach will post her comparison of the coming-out-of-the-tv sections.

i've been saying this for a while now, but after a study, two profs are saying it too: "internet music piracy has no negative effect on legitimate music sales."

good to know that diebold, a manufacturer of evoting equipment that i have spoken of less that enthusiastically over the months, also makes atm machines. and these atm machines could be do with a little more security: "The story is humorous until one realizes that Diebold is the leading producer of electronic voting machines. We can all look forward to playing Minesweeper while exercising our citizenship."

i'm obviously a little biased, but how can anyone in PR get away with being taken seriously when they call a handheld gadget an "iPod killer" (not sure who's words those actually are) when it's 330 grams, roughly three times as thick and roughly twice as long as an iPod? maybe ipod's supersized, monstrously large cousin? did i miss the trend switch away from "mini" towards "big" somewhere in there?

lookit that. MT 3 looks like it's goign alpha real soon. the single most important new feature from my view (and, i might presume from this, sat's) is user registration for comments. . . ah, can't wait.

sometimes PR goes terribly bad. largely when you pretend that actors in your "news" segments are reporters like Karen Ryan. or pharmacists.

as commented on over at sat, sometimes a graph is worth a gazillion words. in case you don't want to take a look, try these (closer to a hundred) ones

interesting little article on how attws is apparently upgrading some non-850MHZ phones. the nicest thing about the article, tho, is how clearly it confims my rationale on why the T68i blew chunks and the T616 i use now is stunningly better.

i know this has appearead everywhere, but this bush using 9/11 in his ads concept just seems imprudent. isn't that the kind of thing where someone goes "wait a minute, didn't our man run around like a panicked chicken that day? do we really want make that the first message we send out?" or maybe they don't.

yo, we're back, i'm really tired. it was fantastic to see sascha and julia again. and completly unexpected to get to see robin and eyal. ok, so i was going to divide this album up into days and sites but if i wait for that it'll be weeks. so here it is, two hundred and fifty-five photos of barcelona. let me say that it wasn't easy choosing a hilight photo.
