this FlipStart thingy is one of those much ballyhooed transmeta-based portables we heard so much about last year. i must admit that i'm i bit numbed to the whole half full-on computer, half handheld thing. and then there is the super-crazy hi-res screen

(from /.) this article (ad-viewing required for whole text, sorry) on salon entitled we don't support that is no surprise to us. it never ceases to amaze me how hard we have to work to get past tier 1 and tier 2 support to get to someone even remotely competent at many support lines. it's not at all infrequent that we just hang up when we get a tech who refuses to escalate and call back to get someone coorperative.

armin first turned me on to these candela lights. today i noticed they've gone bunny on us and vessel now makes a ten light (diff shape i think too) pro, a two light, a candeloo (really cool looking kids version), and an elegant take on the safety light version.

whoah, coincidences. i haven't been to metafilter in ages but an email on what i would call "hacking" the pepsi/itunes promo from the illustrious mr. brown sent me there today. while scrolling down the page, i came across this entry containing a link to what appears to be the entirety of the Harold and Maude screenplay. this is extra weird since i stopped at one of those screenplay street vendors friday morning to see if they had a screen play i could get to give to rach for valentines day (they did not, btw).

this one looks like it was made for ev (despite his new no politics angle): scientists accuse white house of distorting facts. maybe could have also been titled, "white house's cavalier attitude toward science could place at risk the basis for the nation's long-term prosperity, health and military prowess." that's not as catch tho. my fav two quotes

i was looking through the past histories over at my dear collective friend saturation.org and as struck by the timeliness of the second ever post on fortifying foods, bill gates, and means of production. be it prescient or timeless, no less thought-provoking.

so it turns out cingular won its bid to buy at&t wireless. one less mobile phone competitor in the us. wonder if this will have any positive or negative impact for attws subscribers (ie. like me). . . also, worth note is that with my new sony ericsson T616, my recetion up in ulster county was great this weekend. trully a night and day improvement over my sony ericsson T68i. it makes me wonder why attws would even sell the T68i with suhc terrible coverage/reception. the T616, btw, is an attws-specific version of the more common T610, that takes advantage of the attws-only band.

in reading this bit on evan's shatttered glass,
it occured to me that i had always thought it came down to wether the glass had been tempered or not. my roommate and i in college bought a case of standard bar pint glasses (from a restaurant supply shop) that were labelled as heat-tempered. i have never seen one of these break from hot water, despite his regular use of them for tea. that all having been said, this site implies that tempering is purely an issue of increased strength and dafety breakage, not greater heat tolerance. hm.

so apparently there really is a cat allergy vaccine under development (also a smaller snippet at johns hopkins). the pharm company itself don't look too promising -- at all. and then there was the creepy cocain vaccine: "It has been shown in animal models that immunization with the cocaine vaccine leads to a reduction in drug-seeking behavior. We expect that immunized patients will display a similar response." or the nicotine vaccine. seems very clockwork orange-esque for some reason.

in the old days (back when i used to read atat with any regularity), i also used to check dealmac from time to time (whenever i was looking for a bargain). in the interim years, wow, it's now (a) turned into a whole family of dealinsert word here sites including dealcoupon, dealnews, and the newest (i think) member dealcam; and (b) they redesigned the whole thing. nice identity, clean logos, simple, to the point. all good. i'm impressed. if you like to find a good deal, check it out.

i haven't been back to the wacky, apple-(computer)-themed, conspiracy-theory-laden as the apple turns site in a while. now i'm wondering why? the tone of the writing is just fantastic, chock full o' humdingers like, "And the conspiracy just keeps getting clearer and clearer! They called us mad at the university when we sought to reanimate the sutured flesh of the recently deceased-- and, well, okay, they were right about that one. (Lightning... What were we thinking?) But they also called us mad when we hinted that Steve Jobs's oh-so-public scuttling of the Disney-Pixar contract negotiations was deliberately timed as part of an elaborate conspiracy to pry Michael Eisner out of Disney's CEO spot, and the evidence on that one just keeps on piling deeper and deeper. To refresh your memories, here's a quick rundown of what we know so far: a few months back, Walt's nephew Roy Disney got booted from the company's board of directors when Eisner pulled a maneuver with some 'expected retirement age' clause that allegedly didn't even apply to Roy's position. Fellow board member Stan Gold resigned in disgust. . .".

this can't be the first sci-fi weather control device to make it into the real world, and admitedly it's not all that exciting, but the scale/loudness/bixarreness of this device used to stop hail makes it worth note.

not to extract the one critical bit on bush from an article on the the international space station, but: "The Moon, experts say, has now taken on the role of steppingstone. 'Lifting heavy spacecraft and fuel out of the Earth's gravity is expensive,' Mr. Bush said in his speech. 'Spacecraft assembled and provisioned on the Moon could escape its far lower gravity using far less energy, and thus, far less cost.' Many experts are skeptical of those claims, saying Mr. Bush overlooked the large energy costs of getting fuel and rockets to the Moon. Previous NASA studies for Mars missions have seldom if ever used the Moon as a launching pad because that would take about twice as much energy as going from the Earth or an Earth outpost. 'The president and some of his advisers appear not to be aware of the implications,' said Saunders B. Kramer, a veteran aerospace engineer. 'It's worse than a pipe dream. It's nonsense.'"
