now for sony ericsson: the T316 supports 850/1800/1900, the T226 supports 850/1900 MHz GSM/GPRS, the T616, of course, supports GSM 850/1900/1800 (and bluetooth), and not sure what the T630 supports (beyond bluetooth/isync). | trackback 0

ok, i think i got it now (review: at&t uses the 850 (aka 800) and 1900MHz bands in the us) so the phones that use both frequencies would presumably would have the best reception. right? they are the nokia 6800 does GSM/GPRS 850/1900, the 6200 does GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/1800/1900, the 3595 does GSM/GPRS 850/1900, the 3590 does GSM/GPRS 850/1900, the 3300 does GSM/GPRS 850/1900, and the 3100 does GSM 850/1800/1900. none of those support bluetooth, btw. | trackback 0

what do you think? (from nyt via sat): is this: "it was not uncommon for specialists to rework candidate's speeches to sound better in spots, just as newspapers do not tend to include "umms" and "uhs" in quotations." equivalent to this? "The line read, 'It would take one vial, one canister, one crate, slipped into this country to bring a day of horror like none we have ever known.' But Mr. Bush stumbled between the words 'one' and 'vial.' And when at the word vial, he pronounced the 'v' as if it were a 'w.' Yet in a new Republican commercial that borrows excerpts from that speech, Mr. Bush delivers that line as smoothly as any other in the address, without a pause between 'one' and 'vial,' and the v in 'vial' sounds strong and sure." it is just an ad, right? or is "what the president says at the State of the Union ... an essential part of the historical record." | trackback 0

speaking of the downfall into irrelevancy of the matrix trilogy (looking on the bright side?) . . . /. quoting a newsweek article: "It [LOTR] could be the first franchise ever that didn't, at the end of the day, let audiences down -- either because of laziness, pretension, greed or other phantom menaces." | trackback 0

the kid's getting close now . . . so it was off to a house cooling party for louis & satchi over the weekend. | trackback 0

we went shooting 22 rifles yesterday at the west side rifle and pistol range at 20 west 20th (between 6th and 7th); everyone there was ridiculously friendly and nice; it was a heck of a lot of fun and we're def going back. | trackback 0

did i mention somewhere in there that evan is a tutor for chem and physics? | trackback 0

did anyone of you watch that joss weadon (of buffy fame) show called firefly? i did not, but the this unusual project by pb gaines certainly suggests it would have been worth it. hm. | trackback 0

yes, that's skinny, but why would /. say "Sony has a new 0.4" thick VAIO notebook" when the doohickey (scroll down) is only 0.4in (1cm) at the front edge but 0.8in (2.1cm) at the back? say i had a box that was 5x5 and 5 one edge and 1 on the other, would i really be justified in calling it "only 1 thick?" . . . that kind of marketing/hype/sloppiness bugs me. | trackback 0

will spam be criminalized? not quite there yets, but the house apparently passed some kind of antispam bill called "Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing Act' (CAN-SPAM)." h, acronyms. can't live with em, and can't, well, maybe. . . | trackback 0

this e-voting situation is just not looking any better. . . but at least it's getting more and more attention. | trackback 0

very interesting tidbit from phone scoop: "GSM 850 is simply GSM technology operating in the Cellular (800 MHz / 850 MHz) frequency band." that i did not know. . . . and so what about 900MHz? | trackback 0

is this the next 108 day? (make sure you let it run past the first third; that's were it starts getting um, um, juicy). and to think i'd been scratchin my head at all those kaiju posters. . . | trackback 0

now that is a jello mold. | trackback 0

yes, the t1 is down in our office so the photos et al won't be accessible for a bit. | trackback 0

chasing bush. interesting idea: "If you see George W. Bush, know of a possible location ahead of time, or have images of him (or protestors) to share, then send them to [us]." seems kinda like the idea is to fight the bush pr machine with full disclosure by the people? here is a clearer explanation. | trackback 0

chinese new year is not that far away. the year before last we sent out a small gift to our clients of a set of yellow chopsticks and grey m&ms (our corporate colors). interesting that 2004 is the year of the monkey. it falls on january 22 this time. apparently "this is the first day in the Year of the Monkay. It is Year 4701 by Chinese calendar" [sic, sic] | trackback 0

you gotta be kidding me. does microsoft do this stuff on purpose? this isn't even a theoretical exploit. it has actually been employed . . . Mail server flaw opens Exchange to spam: "Greenspan's research concluded that Exchange 5.5 and 2000 can be used by spammers to send anonymous e-mail. He says even though software Microsoft provides on its site certifies that the server is secure, it's not." | trackback 0

the photos from mr bennett and mary lou's visit to nyc are up and ready for your viewing perusal. view, comment, get prints made, and email away. . . | trackback 0

(and this one's for yoshi) the DC C50 digital camera From BenQ. | trackback 0

(this one goes out to armin) the iCar is car into which someone has crammed a chopped up ibook. my reactions? one, um, kinda a lot of tape involved; and two, why chop up the car and an ibook but not add a direct line-in to the car stereo (photos imply it uses a cassette tape adapter)? | trackback 0

finally, some hope for our collection of useless cobalt qubes. Project gigaQube: upgrading the HD and installing netBSD on a MIPS-based qube. | trackback 0

ok, so AT&T uses GSM 850MHz and 1900MHz, but the SE T68i accesses GSM 900/1800/1900 + e-GSM, the Nokia 8890 uses GSM 900/1900 and EGSM 900, and the SE T616 uses GSM 850/1800/1900, and the SE T610 uses GSM 900/1800/1900. hope that clears it up for you all. . . . | trackback 0

anyone remember those wacky USB coffee mug heaters and heated blankets? well, know you got yer USB christmas trees. | trackback 0

yeah. mom mom sent me this one. | trackback 0

[2003/11/12]

it's just a press release, but the one-wheeled bombardier embrio looks so sci-fi turned real. much cooler than a segway. at least in "concept" form. | trackback 0

oh yeah, we're doing a swell job moving to e-voting here in these united states. heck, what's wrong with a system that, oops, drops in an extra 138,648 votes. in a county with fewer than 19,000 voters (and what if there have only been 10,000 extra votes logged? would they even have noticed?). | trackback 0

[2003/11/11]

so much activity lately in letting consumers make choices about landline and wireless phoen service. now you can turn your landline telephone number into a mobile number. and of course then you can switch from mobile to mobile provider at will (contracts aside of course). | trackback 0

sun we swung by the jen's bday + trivial pursuit potluck at gowri and linda's house, with a bottle o bearsitos in hand. ok, ok, that was my contribution. rach brought something more than just technically edible. hummus. | trackback 0

spent this past weekend at the coop enjoying some brisk hikes (i'm relying on rach to do some entitling of images). and saw a poor older fella who had fallen and sliced up his nose. i hope that guy made it to the hospital and is ok. lotta blood. | trackback 0

bush senior sounds prescient in this article at memoryhole (from /.): "Going in and occupying Iraq, thus unilaterally exceeding the U.N.'s mandate, would have destroyed the precedent of international response to aggression we hoped to establish. Had we gone the invasion route, the U.S. could conceivably still be an occupying power in a bitterly hostile land. It would have been a dramatically different--and perhaps barren--outcome." . . . never mind the whole creepy this-has-been-removed-from-time-magazine's-web-site issue. . . | trackback 0

the photos from the Yushinkan Dojo One Year Anniversary are up. | trackback 0

fate does not want me to own a sony RM-AV2000 remote. i have now bid on and lost eight different auctions for the same model number. today's failure was bidding $38.03 and losing it to a $39.00 bid. ugh. at least it was more than two cents this time. | trackback 0

going to see colin's scratch's last lament next weekend: "Paris, 18 May 1945: V-E Day. Lead by the United States, the Allies have finally routed the Axis Powers, France has been liberated and Berlin taken. After so many terrible years, the war in Europe is finally over and the streets of Paris are thronged with jubilllent [sic] crowds while American G.I.'s swagger through the city like triumpant victors. Amidst this backdrop, Death and the Devil, Old Scratch himself, meet for dinner in the City of Lights, along the Rue de Bac. Over a meal consisting of mostly wine and cigarettes, Death and Scratch discuss the war and their jobs, all of it leading up to a proposal from Scratch that could change the way both of them perceive the world." | trackback 0

micky d's is blowing [up to] a billion bucks at the apple itunes store: " McDonald's plans to give away up to 1 billion songs in a marketing campaign, according to sources familiar with the matter.... Both Pepsi and McDonald's are paying Apple's retail price of 99 cents per song..." um, or not. | trackback 0

[2003/11/05]

this statement by maher arar brough tears to my eyes. the simple, clear language of the statement is so matter of fact. | trackback 0

if the terrible reviews of matrix revolutions are to believed, then this the plan of opening it "on 10,013 screens in more than 50 countries and in 43 languages" may be more about this reason the the other claims of "showmanship:" "And just as important, Warner Brothers wants to make as much money as it can during the movie's first few weeks to protect against a sudden falloff in attendance." | trackback 0

WhatIsTheMeatrix? . . . kinda makes me chuckle and queesy at the. . . yeah, you read that right: Meatrix. | trackback 0

so the kids at sat (welcome back db, ks) like the bit about rumsfeld losing his mojo, but the very next passage speaks more to me: "A new study from the Center for Public Integrity revealed that the 70 companies that have benefited the most from $8 billion in government contracts in Iraq and Afghanistan collectively contributed more than $500,000 to President Bush's 2000 presidential campaign. Congressional negotiators stripped a measure criminalizing war profiteering from the final version of the $87 billion spending bill for Iraq." | trackback 0

just my two cents worth: "How did this happen? eBay compares your bid to those of others. You were outbid because another bidder placed a higher maximum bid than your bid ofUS $36.01. Winning bid: US $36.03" | trackback 0

[2003/11/03]

so america's election processes are, as fbest as i can tell, being unabashedly coopted (and protentially corrupted) by diebold et al. meanwhile the australians are actually thinking it through and doing something that makes sense. | trackback 0

you suck AT&T. you already violated the do not call list? $780,000 fine, mofo. | trackback 0

this is interesting. microsoft announced today that they are moving the next version of their xbox to powerpc (the same core architecture that macintosh computers and the nintendo console use), away from intel. | trackback 0

[2003/11/02]

i'm using Mojo Mail on the FoBR projet. very nice, if occasionally a bit confusing, web interface. | trackback 0

i think it's time to replace the damaged seimens gigaset i brought home from the office months ago. i'm wafflign about wired, wireless, display, speakerphone, etc. . . some options: the Enzer ET-T1; the Enzer ET-8408; the Siemens Il Telefono Alessi (pretty sure this one is off the shortlist). | trackback 0

it's late on a sunday night, so this reads like gobbledegook to me, but later in the week i'm gonna wrap my head around this Integrating Gallery Into Movable Type page from dlugosz.net. or maybe i'm going to try out this page on how to Create a fotolog with MovableType over at kung-foo. | trackback 0

spooky. . . some photos are already up from all hallow's eve. | trackback 0
