is it really deconstructing (the patriot act pr campaign) or just rebutting it? | trackback 0

amusingly silly: "Groening recalled how [Fox News Channel] had considered legal action, despite the fact that 'The Simpsons' is broadcast on... Fox Entertainment" | trackback 0

i already think ken lay is an ass. | trackback 0

i like the idea of having users report cell phone dead spots: "Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the city will try to root out cell phone dead spots by asking people to report places where they can't get service." boy does that drive me nuts. | trackback 0

ok, so theres the creepy, anti-federal survivalists and then there's the, um, new survivalists. only these ones sell weird sharper image-esque crap like safetychick (including "two 'Party Girl Watch Your Cocktail' drink test coasters with two test pads (to test for date rape drugs)"), nyc puzzle (in the print catalog, "Remember the Manhattan skyline the way it used to be?"), and water wizard (how does "wilting plants in hard to reach places" relate to survivial?). hm. | trackback 0

nokia is clearly smoking crack with the 7700. imagine the danger hiptop slept with the developmentally disabled newton and had a funny little kid. | trackback 0

ah the onion, how i love thee. . . CIA-Leak Scapegoat Still At Large: "'The team is hard at work, but the process of finding the perfect scapegoat is very time-consuming,' Bush said. 'While we can assume that this person will not be a member of my senior staff, we have few other concrete ideas about his identity. Why, the scapegoat may turn out to be someone who knew absolutely nothing about the leak. You can see how difficult the job is.'" | trackback 0

some new photos up from this weekend atthe coop with mark's parents and rae. | trackback 0

thanks to phil, this article came to my attention today (i had noted the event in august, but not the defendant's name). it contains some wacky news about an old classmate (and in my case sometimes neighbor) yosef. and it turns out (also from phil) that salon wrote a little ditty on his book. . . not exactly enthusiastically positive. | trackback 0

to quote slashdot quoting this article: "That said, spam is not universally hated. About a third of people responded to a spam, seeking more information. And 7 percent actually bought a product or service." -- wtf?! a 7% response rate is huge. and certainly explains where the business model is. again, to quote /., "who are these people?" | trackback 0

[2003/10/21]

depressing e-voting news again. slashdot says it better than i will be able to: "Reassuring PR is Stage Two; remember that Stage One is silence your critics." | trackback 0

have i mentioned that my T68i mobile phone sucks? i swore i would not get another sony ericsson next, but the T616/610 feels real nice in the hand. and the P900 looks impressive. alas, none of nokia's current offerings excite me. i thought that was what i'm waiting for. maybe it was the T610. | trackback 0

this brilliant headline comes not from the onion, but from the register: "Microsoft monopoly says Apple monopoly is too restrictive" . . . ah, truth and fiction. . . | trackback 0

i've been wishing the ipod had functionality like this for ages. it's a media reader that allows you to transfer photos (etc) from your digital camera to your ipod without a computer. this would be ideal for travelling light. | trackback 0

kind of a weird image: dawn detergent: "saving wildlife for 20 years." | trackback 0

i usually prefer to refer to primary sources, but this thread on metafilter about how "American middle class overconsumption is a myth:" why? "Over the past generation mortgage costs have increased 70 times faster than a man's wages." | trackback 0

this PHP iCalendar thing is nifty. what a wonderful world of great web-based software out there. gallery, movavbletype. . . | trackback 0

ah, now this is awfully handy: Installing Movable Type at DreamHost. would have been nice a week ago (before i installed mt and got 95% of it working), but better late than never. . . n. | trackback 0

even if "Everything it said is dead accurate. We've done a really good job," i do have to agree that "It makes it look like you cheated on a test, and everybody got the same grade" (from sat) yes, it is not cool. | trackback 0

hey, i've been to darmstadt. in college i visited phil there and met my father when he passed through on a conference. | trackback 1

i'm growing more interested in the idea of a next american president who can use the word "vitiated" correctly in a sentence; and in a sentence that appears in the new york review of books no less. mr barrett's brother cam clearly already feels the same way. | trackback 0

is this the new new testament? or the "completely new" new testament? heck, if "Michael ... gives you tons of practical tips for living radically for Christ," how can a girl go wrong? | trackback 0

dude, (i think the peeps at sat were trying to link to this article at calpundit) this really is the The Texas Republican Party Platform for 2000. some samples? "The Party believes the minimum wage law should be repealed." or how about "The Party believes it is in the best interest of the citizens of the United States that we immediately rescind our membership in, as well as all financial and military contributions to, the United Nations." holy shit, batman. | trackback 0

this FFB concept seems ike a great tool to cut down on spam. in essence, the idea is to crawl any site listed in the body of a spam message (as determined by a black list; that's the weakest link) with a spider that serves no purpose: "If widely used, auto-retrieving spam filters [aka FFBs] would make the email system rebound. The huge volume of the spam, which has so far worked in the spammer's favor, would now work against him, like a branch snapping back in his face. Auto-retrieving spam filters would drive the spammer's costs up, and his sales down: his bandwidth usage would go through the roof, and his servers would grind to a halt under the load, which would make them unavailable to the people who would have responded to the spam. Pump out a million emails an hour, get a million hits an hour on your servers." | trackback 0

great little article drawing parrallels between suits filed by the Association of Licensed Automobile Manufacturers from 1903-1911 against Ford and his customers and teh RIAA and their current pile of lawsuits against their customers. | trackback 0

i'm installing panther beta build 85 on my powerbook as i type. . . the earlier betas have been really impressive and it's time to take the plunge. | trackback 0

another clear article disputing the false claim that linux and mac os x systems are no more secure than windows: "Windows is an inviting petri dish for viruses and worms, while Linux is a hostile environment for such nasties." word. | trackback 0

[2003/10/06]

i don't like buying into conspiracy theories (perhaps the last few lame seasons of the x files killed the plausibility that they could really exist on any grand scale) but the flood of news about california, bush (h and w), arhnold, enron, power dereg (disclosure: i own stock in valero, devon, and green mountain) just starts keeps sounding more and more convincing of late. | trackback 0

[2003/10/05]

weird. i got this bulk email that read "if you are a Noah and it applys (0r know a Noah then forward) ... then APPLY! [URL here] We are unique, not by name alone! Blogs of Noahs Ring." dude, how could i turn that down? [ prev # BLOGS OF NOAH & next ] | trackback 0

a beautiful statement by greer of the situation surrounding his firing: "The Venn diagram of facts doesn't intersect. The intersection of all of those statements is the null set." clearly he won't be wanting for employment but this whole firing still stinks to high heaven. | trackback 0
