more potentially good anti-spam news. this time from michigan: a do-not-call style registry. speaking of, the FTC do not call registry (actually now taking info) has an info page up (the actual donotcall.gov site wasn't working when i posted this, tho). | trackback 0

ah, two great tastes: vice and blacktable. thanks irwin (yeah, from sat). | trackback 0

this honda "cog" ad is something else. . . | trackback 0

this page on victorian visions of the year 2000 is quite thought provoking, not just to see what we have and have not developed, but also how what these cards' creators wished would be versus what we wish for. (from mefi) | trackback 0

congress is looking good on a compelling spam bill. now this anti-spam approach makes sense to me (why it was illegal to use false headers on faxes but not email always perplexed me): "The Senate Commerce Committee unanimously approved a bill to make it illegal for anyone to use fraudulent or deceptive return e-mail addresses, fake e-mail headers or use false subject lines. The bill would allow marketers to send an initial unsolicited e-mail message, but require that the message contain a clear way for consumers to opt out of receiving further messages." | trackback 0

the new treo 600 is a good size. would like to play with one before passing judgement tho. did i mention that i just switched to a sony ericsson T68i (still with att) on monday? its ui is way pokey (and half the games have incomprehensible rules) but overall, does what it aims too. i'm esp curious how att's gsm coverage will when i head out of nyc. | trackback 0

"i'm 45th generation roman" . . . "i'm takin about when shit goes pear-shaped" . . . been listening to the streets a lot the last couple of days (thanks to rae). a couple of duds on there, but a slew of really ass-kickin, excellent songs. | trackback 0

i used the word "interesting" six times on this page (between march and june). . . hm. is that interesting? (seven) | trackback 0

802.11g (what apple calls airport extreme) is now an official standard. i wonder how the also approved 802.15.3 relates to bluetooth (their intended use seem nearly identical; or at least substantially overlapping) -- competitor? diff name for same thing? variant? friend? | trackback 0

it would be really, really interesting to me if the keyboard/mouse use connection to carpal tunnel syndrome proves to be very poor: "'Can keyboard use then be considered an occupational risk for developing carpal tunnel syndrome? From our data it seems unlikely,' the study said. 'But based on other studies, we cannot exclude the possibility that very intensive and repetitive keyboard use could be a risk factor ... however our opinion is that it is not an important one,' the study concluded." that all having been said, i'm in general dubious of all these kinds of studies (only 20 hours a week?). . . (from rae) a related study up at humanscale about an ergo study: "Findings of a two-year study investigating health problems associated with use of non-keyboard input devices (NKID) are presented. The research used a combination of methods to determine the extent to which different NKID are currently in use, how they are used and the problems that result." i haven't finished ready it so far, but i'm curious about trackpad vs mouse use; i use a trackpad almost exclusively these days, but i would not describe my usage as "continual" anymore. | trackback 0

some interesting backstory on indie labels and the itunes music store. i'm not in the industry but it sure seems like a solid, simple deal for small labels. | trackback 0

in the "i'm not sure what value this creates, but it sure is interesting; for a minute, at least" department: maps of interelationships on the web: the oracle of bacon, the number of degrees of separation between brown and i, and the sorta working inverted fotolog database (at the moment i appear to be no one's friend/favorite anymore. snif. at least sugar is still one of the popular kids). | trackback 0

the nokia observation camera is both a touch creepy and really, really slick. it's basically a still camera with a GSM cel phone built-in that can email (via MMS) images. that does seem to make the X10-style cheesy wireless cameras udeful in a whole new range of places. wonder what happens if you stick on in a moving location (car service/limo) and it passes through a loctaion without messaging support; does it hold the image and try again or just fail? | trackback 0
