can't say i'm shocked. as usual apple gets highest marks over at consumer reports (reader report, not internal study). but what i think is interesting (and disturbing) is this statistic: "In a survey of 39,000 Consumer Reports readers, 4 percent bought a computer that was completely inoperable within the first month; another 10 percent had problems that month but could use the computers." -- ie. 14% of new computers don't work right within the first month. i gotta say that's almost an argument for buying used.

good, succinct article at wired that elegantly expresses what i feel is the core problem with the while concept of DRM (digital rights management): "We're screwed. Not because we MP3 cowboys and cowgirls will not have to pay for content we've been 'stealing.' No, we're screwed because we're undercutting the basis of our shared intellectual and creative lives. For us to talk, argue, try out ideas, tear down and build up thoughts, assimilate and appropriate concepts - heck, just to be together in public - we have to grant all sorts of leeway. That's how ideas breed, how cultures get built."

there is something wonderful and yet absurd about a cardboard computer.

the "salmiakkipippurikaramelleja" has arrived from finland. i suspect the specific brand name is TYRKISK PEBER. oh, and this trully is the 21st century: there is a website on the otherwise unintelligable package. speaking of the website, great (retro) packing on the Supersalmiakki xyl; and there sure are a lot of variations on the salmiakki (which i now realize i've managed to mispell dozens of diff ways over the last two weeks) theme.

i have been working on a pro bono project for storefront some of yesterday eve and most of today. pretty much done except for some usability and consistency massaging. they now have a web-searchable archive of the last twenty years of exhibitions (their 20th anniversary exhibition opens next week). the amount of information about each event is still very limited (just dates, title, and participants) and only exhibits (not symposia, lectures, and other events), but as they finish the abstracts and flesh out the data this should continue to grow as a valuable resource. it is always kinda exciting to step in and take a body of information that was previous totally inaccessible (except to people who could walk down to the basement on kenmare street and pore through hundreds of uncataloged binders) and suddenly make it available to the world. neato, huh?
