the major record labels and retailers settled a price-fixing suit and as part of it are required to refund up to $20 to anyone who bought a music at a retail store between 1995 and 2000. go take a look around before 3/3. huh.

gibson's magic custom digital network technology based on ethernet: The Magic technology will let users apply unique digital effects to each string of the guitar and control remote amps or other devices from the guitar's knobs (and vice versa). It will also simplify stage and studio setup, substituting low-cost Category 5 cables that can be bought at a local computer store for the thick, expensive analog cables used today. Devices will automatically identify themselves over a Magic network to a mixer that can have custom settings for every instrument in a band loaded onto a CD for fast setup. this could certainly neaten up stage/studio cabling and make hunting for that one bad cable potentially easier but more crucial.

somehow the onion just keeps coming up with inspired articles: While the Bush Administration remains publicly confident that a diplomatic solution can be reached, top officials admit that the situation has become more complicated. "If we add Kim Jong Il's transformation into a giant robot to his already defiant isolationist stance and his country's known nuclear capability, the diplomatic terrain definitely becomes more rocky," U.S. envoy James Kelly said. "Kim has made it clear that, if sufficiently threatened, he will not hesitate to use nuclear weapons or his arm-mounted HyperBazooka." Added Kelly: "We are also forced to consider the possibility that Kim may attempt to robo-meld with other members of the Axis of Evil, forming a MegaMecha-Optima-Robosoldier. Kim would make a powerful right arm—or even a torso—for such a mechanism."

it's not that often that you hear about hacking leaving the world of bits and bytes and landing in that of schlage, yale, and master. i wonder if any manufacturers will claim the DMCA applies to this exploit?

i have been thinking (and talking with my family) a lot lately about charities, non-profits, and charitable giving. One thing that drives me nuts is when charities spending crazy amounts of money harassing you to donate multiple times a year. some i have following lately are as follows: the Floating Hospital; the the Electronic Freedom Foundaton; the Network for Good (this one i know little about, but that seems worth exploring further); and the Jewish Fund for Justice.
